Julie has passed on some photographs taken in 1967 by a gentleman called Fred Start. This text is a link.

Heres two more Fred has sent taken in 1940 and 1941 together with his comments.

Mr Lancaster the village school headmaster is standing far left and dear Miss Whitehead seated far right.Indeed both were still alive in 1967 if my memory is correct.
The soldiers  slept in a large hut on the left hand side of the village entering from White woods end  and had a large tent  on open ground immediately across the high street  where they did their cooking and ate. .
During the bad winter of 1940/41 I remember so clearly watching Margaret Lockwood in The Lady Vanishes  courtesy of an old two reel film projector in the village hall. Some of us used to have a bath night due to the kindness of  a lady in the little shop on the right just past the village hall
